Governor Corbett Signs Justice Reinvestment; Other Law Enforcement Bills
 
Harrisburg - Governor Tom Corbett today signed House Bill 135, the second phase of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative that will redirect funds from corrections to communities. Corbett also signed into law several other pieces of legislation, all related to Pennsylvania's criminal justice system.

Governor Corbett Signs Law Helping PA Fire and Emergency Companies
 
Harrisburg - Governor Tom Corbett today ceremonially signed the Firefighter Grant Program law, also known as Senate Bill 866, providing grant money for Pennsylvania's fire, ambulance and emergency companies. "Since that day in 1736, when Benjamin Franklin organized the first fire brigade in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has been blessed with a rich tradition of volunteers,'' Corbett said.

Harrisburg - Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett today toured the SHINE (Schools and Homes in Education) Career Academy, an after-school program at Carbon Career and Technical Institute that serves sixth- through eighth-grade students. The program provides students with important educational and hands-on skills to prepare them for the future.

Marcellus Shale Impact Fee Brings in More Than $204 Million for Pennsylvania Communities
 
Harrisburg - Governor Tom Corbett today announced that Act 13, along with greatly enhancing environmental standards to ensure the protection of our natural resources, has generated more than $204.2 million through the new impact fee. Most of this money will be distributed directly to local communities across the state.

Governor Corbett Speaks During PetSmart Distribution Center Groundbreaking
 
Bethel - Governor Tom Corbett spoke today at the groundbreaking ceremony for a future PetSmart distribution center in Bethel, Berks County, which will create hundreds of new jobs for Pennsylvanians. Partnering with the state, PetSmart will build an 870,000 square foot distribution center that will serve 260 retail locations in 11 states as well as eastern Canada. The distribution center will be operational by 2014.

First Case of Chronic Wasting Disease Found in Pennsylvania Deer Adams County Captive Deer Tests Positive; No Evidence of Effect on Humans
 
Harrisburg - The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture today confirmed the first positive case of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in the state on a deer farm in Adams County. The disease is fatal in deer, elk and moose, but there is no evidence that CWD can be transmitted to humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and The World Health Organization.

Pittston - Governor Tom Corbett today highlighted Lowe's employment and training program for persons with disabilities while on a tour of Lowe's regional distribution center in Pittston, Luzerne County. Corbett was joined on the tour by Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley, Department of Public Welfare Secretary Gary D. Alexander, Lowe's management, and representatives of the Department of Labor and Industry and The Arc of Luzerne County.

Governor Corbett Applauds Funding Sources for State Police Cadets
 
Hershey - Governor Tom Corbett today applauded efforts by the state legislature to support funding for the Pennsylvania State Police, including two new cadet classes. Standing behind the Governor on the steps of the State Police Academy in Hershey today were some of the 101 new cadets scheduled to graduate in December as well as 78 additional cadets expected to graduate in March 2013.

State Capitol Fountain Turns Pink as First Lady Susan Corbett Kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month
 
Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett, along with former Pennsylvania First Lady Michele Ridge, today joined the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) as it turned the State Capitol's War Veterans Memorial Fountain pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event marked the PBCC's 20th anniversary of raising awareness of breast cancer in Pennsylvania. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which reminds all women of the importance of breast health, the need for self exams, check-ups and mammograms.
