Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor celebrated the start of Black History Month by highlighting the life and career of noted historian, and Harrisburg native, Mr. Calobe Jackson, Jr."Mr. Jackson's unique perspectives on Black history remind us how far Pennsylvania has come and the work that remains to be done," DeFoor said. "As the first Black person elected to statewide office in Pennsylvania, I wouldn't have had the opportunities I have had without the lifelong effort to advance the cause of equality of Mr. Jackson and other historic Black leaders like him. Our work is not done and we must continue to have leaders in government that reflect the makeup of our great state."The interview was featured in the Department of the Auditor General's joint Black History Month observance with the Pennsylvania Treasury, which was livestreamed to employees of both agencies during their lunch hour.Born in Harrisburg in 1930, Mr. Jackson has lectured and written on numerous historical topics and has an extensive record of community service, including service on the Harrisburg School Board and the Harrisburg Planning Commission. A military veteran, he served with one of the last all-Black U.S. Army battalions.
